The Dokuritsu Budo Renmei is a completely independent body instituted to support serious exponents of martial arts, who do not want to become a part of any large organization.
Organizational martial arts caters for large groups of hundreds or thousands of students who become members. Whilst training skills become standardised and simplified for mass tuition, there is the homogenous bond of similarity and uniformity that often fills members with a comfort zone. This may suit many participants who enjoy activities in this format and there is nothing wrong with this concept. Nevertheless, in a democracy there must always be choice.
The original skills were taught in Japan (and the Far East) with what was termed ‘Isshin Denshin’, this refers to small classes where the teacher (master) passes on their skills by direct transmission. During this personal method of teaching, much older and more subtle aspects are able to be transmitted to the student. It is the preferred method for many, given the choice.
The Dokuritsu Budo Renmei supports the latter and members share a common interest in maintaining small personal classes, many of which have retained and maintained skills that were taught in their entirety many years ago, but have since been modified to meet modern budo expectations. The best term to describe the Dokuritsu Budo Renmei is the Latin phrase ‘ ejusdem generis’, which means ‘of the same kind’, or sharing a common interest.
Members follow their own path under a united umbrella, the main guiding factor is that the instructors teach with integrity and honesty about the source and nature of their chosen skill. Further, etiquette, mutual respect, safety, and personal development are the guiding goals.
